Yesterday we spent the day at my parents’ house for Easter.
As I usually do, I wandered up into my old bedroom.
You know, just to reminisce.
If you’ve been around here for a while, you know that my grandmother died shortly before Christmas.
There was some stuff from her condo up in my room.
My grandma kept a mean scrapbook, and one of them was one sitting in a box at the foot of my bed.
I opened it and started paging through.
There is at least one novel to be written from that scrapbook.
And someday I will write it.
Before I get to that, I just had to share something I found…
My parents are closing in on 50 years of marriage.
50 years.
On one of the pages of that scrapbook there was an envelope.
It said Western Union Telegraph Company on the outside.
There was a piece of paper folded inside of it.
A telegram.
Whoah.
I had never actually seen one before.
And I’m quite sure Numbers 1 through 7 have never even heard that word before.
I took the piece of paper out of the envelope and opened it up.
So cool, and so awesome.
It was sent to my grandparents from my parents, who were 19 and 20 at the time.
They were just checking in after arriving in Bermuda on their honeymoon.
I’m pretty sure it was the first time they had been on an airplane.
The next time I don’t hear from one of the kids instantaneously,
or the next time one of the kids complains about this or her phone (or complete lack of one),
I’ll break out this picture of a prehistoric text.
Because sometimes you just need a little reminder to put things into perspective.
