Being An Older Mom Keeps You Young

May 6, 2025 by not your average mom Leave a Comment

When I was in my twenties, I had more than one “older” mom tell me, “Being an older mom keeps you young.”

I thought of this today when I saw a post on Threads about Rihanna being pregnant with her third baby at 37 years old. It was reminding women in their thirties that it’s not too late for them.

I had to laugh since I had my kids when I was 35, 36, 39, 40, and 41.

Here’s what I have to say about not having kids until I was of “advanced maternal age.”

THANK GOD!

I’m 55 years old. I’m older than just about all my kids’ friends’ parents.

And you know what?

I do not care one bit.

In fact, I like it.

I have perspective and experience and no forks left to give about most things.

I’ve learned not to sweat the small stuff as much, and I waste less time (and money) on things that aren’t important.

I learned to stop comparing what I’m doing to what other women are doing (or what they appear to be doing on the outside) a while ago.

Those women who told me being an older mom keeps you young were right.

Your kids don’t just keep you moving; they also keep you seeing the world through younger eyes.

Besides, my kids didn’t need me to be a young mom – they needed me to be this mom.
