Ground turkey is a staple in my house. It’s so versatile, and I use it a lot.
So one thing I do to save myself a couple steps and some time, especially on those weeknights that are super crazy, is to brown a whole bunch of it and freeze it.
I usually buy my ground turkey from Costco. It comes in a four pack, and it’s a total of about 7 pounds between the four packages. Each package is appx. 1.75 pounds.
It looks like this:
Once a month or so, as soon as I get home from shopping, I open all four packages cook two at a time in a cast iron pan. I either cook two and then the other two right after, or I use two pans at once and brown all four packages simultaneously.
Then I throw a colander inside a large pot and dump the browned turkey in to drain it quickly.
While the turkey is draining and cooling off, I label 6 gallon Ziploc bags. (It’s easier to label them before you put anything in them).
Then I fill them up!
I flatten them out so they are all uniform, and then I stack them in the freezer.
Now I have one component of six meals already done. All I have to do is pull a bag out of the freezer and throw it into whatever I’m making.
This is great when you need browned ground meat for a crockpot recipe. Or you can add in taco seasonings for quick tacos, quickly make sloppy joes, add to tomato sauce for a meat sauce, into lasagna, chili — anything that calls for browned ground turkey (or ground beef)!
A twenty minute investment of your time saves you hours on the other end!
