There is a difference between an athlete and a jock.
An athlete has class.
An athlete treats people with respect.
An athlete is a role model.
An athlete recognizes that he or she is not without faults, and takes responsibility for his or her actions when he or she fucks up.
An athlete does not think he or she is better than anyone else.
An athlete is friends with other athletes.
But an athlete is also friends with non-athletes.
With the intellectuals.
The kids in the drama club.
Even the kids who, gasp, are in the band.
An athlete would defend a person being picked on, regardless of who it was.
And no matter who was doing the picking.
And then there are the jocks.
Jocks are assholes.
Arrogant pricks who abuse their popularity.
Who pick on people who aren’t also jocks.
I had the pleasure of hanging out with a bunch of these people last night.
Grown men who waited until a woman,
my friend,
went into the bathroom,
and then piled a floor-to-ceiling stack of boxes in front of a bathroom door to block her in there,
turned off all the lights in the downstairs of the house,
and then ran outside like a bunch of 12-year-old punks,
sneering,
and laughing,
and waiting.
Waiting to see how angry,
or scared,
or humiliated
she became.
I am still sick to my stomach over this.
If a group of 40 and 50-something men will stoop to this behavior in public, what awful things will they do when no one is around to watch?
And what did they do when they were younger?
How did they (mis)treat women in college?
How are they teaching their sons to treat women?
The wives of these “men” are no better.
Condoning, and defending this disgusting behavior.
Pathetic, middle-aged bullies.
All of you.
To the three true gentlemen who saw something and said something,
thank you.
As for you pitiful bullies, I’m not surprised that when called out for your shameful behavior you took no responsibility.
I mean how could you?
You’re just a bunch of jocks.

for those that don’t wish to click on the link:
To clear things up, there is a major difference between a jock and athletes. Jocks tend to abuse their popularity, while the athletes don’t really mind who they talk to or hang out with.
Signs of a jock: Rude, arrogant, stupid, beats up people, dates only cheerleaders and hangs around other jocks
Signs of a true athlete: Love their sport, try to stay down-to-earth (a little arrogance is expected), hang out with whoever they want, date whoever they want, might beat people up but that doesn’t mean it was uncalled for.
