One of the best Christmas presents I ever got was this:
A Mickey Mouse record player.
I loved that thing.
In fact, many of my Christmas vacation memories revolved around that record player.
Every Christmas, starting around the time I was 10 years old, I would get a new record.
And then I would proceed to sit in my room for hours, every day of vacation, and listen to it.
With Mickey Mouse.
I will never forget the first record I ever got.
Andy Gibb.
I felt so grown up.
I joined his fan club.
I listened to and dreamed about him every day.
Poor Andy.
The next year, I got this one:
It was a double album. So cool.
Olivia Newton John was so pretty.
I wore that baby out.
The next year it was Billy Joel.
52nd Street.
Honesty.
My Life.
Big Shot.
Still one of my faves.
The next year?
This one:
Xanadu.
My cousin gave me that one.
The next year?
Back to Billy Joel.
(I never realized until now how influential Billy and Olivia were on my childhood).
Greatest Hits Volume 1 and 2.
Movin Out.
You could never argue with a crazy mamamamamama….
I still love that one too.
The last album I remember receiving was a little later. I was in high school.
Steve Winwood.
Back in the High Life.
On the Mickey Mouse record player.
It used to seem to me, that my life went on too fast…
Now?
The Mickey Mouse record player is gone.
And so are the albums.
But the memories,
and the songs,
remain.
I’m a little bummed that my kids won’t experience the magic of a new record.
Or the Mickey Mouse Record Player.
But this year, and every year after, Santa will definitely give them the magic of music.
And hopefully,
in twenty or thirty years,
they will look back on this time in their lives with similar memories.
Only theirs will include the Sexiest Man Alive.
I guess that’s a fair trade for Mickey Mouse.
