Here is my philosophy regarding cell phones and kids.
Until they are old enough to be somewhere on their own, without any adult supervision,
um,
they don’t need one.
My 8-year-old does not need a cell phone.
My 7-year-old does not need a cell phone.
My 4-year-old sure as hell does not need a cell phone.
So when I clicked on this link yesterday,
the one that described a freaking mobile phone for 4-year-olds,
I was,
um,
perplexed.
Why the hell would your four-year-old need a phone?
Who are the parents that are dropping their preschoolers off at the playground alone?
Have a nice time, Johnny. If a stranger tries to give you any candy while you are on the swings, just push that red button and give Mommy a call.
See you in 2 hours.
Okay, so it’s not just a phone.
It’s a watch, tracking device, and phone.
Designed by a dad who lost his kid at the mall (he found eventually found him).
It costs $200.
It would take all of 3 minutes for my kids to take that thing off and leave it somewhere.
So until they find a way to lock that mothereffer on like Lindsay Lohan’s ankle bracelet,
um,
I’ll pass on the Get Smart watch.
If I really get desperate, I’ll do what any intelligent, overprotective and frugal mom would do…
I’ll make an appointment with the vet, and microchip those kids for twenty bucks.

they make leashes for kids….I am not opposed.

let me clarify….Im not opposed to leashes. I am opposed to that crazy device and kids having cell phones unless they are alone at an activity and then they get my old flip phone……

This overprotective parenting business has got to stop! I realized I wasn’t overprotective parent when my first child was born and I looked at the mountain of ‘safety’ items… And used virtually none of it.

I am sure that some people won’t find this comment appropriate, but we always joke that anyone who took our children would bring them back in about five minutes. No special watch needed.

Totally agreed with this sentiment……all the way up until I finally divorced my kids Dad. A cell was not an option, it is a necessity. I honestly don’t know what I would have done if they hadn’t had their phones. Sad, but true :/

Hahaha Emily! I always think at Chick E. Cheese’s. Do you actually think I’m crazy enough to leave with a child that is not mine?! No thank you!
On cell phones. I Agree 100%. My 10 year old will not have a cell phone for many years to come. As long as you do not drive, one of us will always be with you or an adult that has a phone will be.

I get the concept however I don’t think it is a great idea. NOTHING takes place of good old supervision. How many moms will be more apt to not pay as close attention to their 7 or 8 year olds because the child has some removable device on. The real danger there is some weirdo taking the child and tossing the device away.
